I just read Hattie Collins’ interview with the legendary Janet Jackson (here) and was inspired to reload some of her tunes. It doesn’t take a lot for me to delve into Janet’s back catalogue to be honest – I’m pretty much a fully fledged stan. And while there are many hits to list/feature, this one just came on and I felt compelled to post it up.
“Rhythm Nation” isn’t actually my favourite song or album of Janet’s (its one of, but not the), but it’s so just hard. Man, she goes in. The lyrics, the instrumentation, the video, the choreography – everything about it. For me, it’s just as revolutionary today as it was back then. No one does this any more. And actually this track was Michael Jackson’s favourite Janet track. He said in an interview that he gave Janet the idea of a military theme; A theme he was actually planning on using in one of his own videos. But after hearing her track, he urged her to use it instead.
I’ve always had mad love for Janet. I still do. Legend.
